Johnson Sets Meet Record at Pac-10 Outdoor Championships
May 17, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. -
California won three titles at the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships today in Tempe, Ariz. Leading the way for the Golden Bears were senior All-Americans Alysia Johnson and Ed Wright who both repeated as conference champions. The Cal men finished in fourth place with 81.5 points, while the Cal women tied with Washington State for sixth place with 71.5 points.
'What a great meet,' said interim director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'I'm really proud of their effort and the way they stepped up. Winning three conference championships is great, and we got a few upsets. Every race was so exciting, one after another. It was a good night to run fast.'
Johnson won her second straight 800-meter Pac-10 title with a time of 2:00.57 that was a season best and also a meet record. The previous record time was 2:01.74, set by Johnson at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. Johnson's time is also the best 800-meter time in the nation this season.
Wright won his second straight Pac-10 high jump title, as he once again tied his personal best with a jump of 7-3.25 (2.22m).
Sophomore Kimyon Broom, who set the school record in 100-meter hurdles yesterday in the prelims at 13.17, claimed Cal's third conference title in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.26.
Both of the women's relays recorded second-place finishes, NCAA regional-qualifying times and the best relay times of the season for the Cal women. The 4x100-meter relay consisting of Broom, junior Kandi Bonty, junior Kristin Holmes and freshman Cherrelle Garrett earned a season-best time of 44.69. The women's 4x400-meter relay consisting of freshman Hayley Huxtable, Bonty, junior Evelyn Smith and Johnson clocked a 3:36.93. On the men's side, the 4x100-meter relay consisting of junior Kellan Patterson, freshman Michael Bradley, freshman Nick Porter and senior Thomas Mack notched the best time of the season for the Cal men and a regional-qualifying time of 40.55.
Garrett also posted an impressive time of 11.446 in the 100-meter dash, taking second as Arizona State's Charonda Williams just beat out Garrett for first at 11.444.
Junior Katie Morgan and freshman Allison Stokke took third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault. They both posted a mark of 13-5.75 (4.11m). The mark for Stokke is also a freshman record, as she topped her previous record-setting mark of 13-3.50.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, junior Jake Hanson took second with a personal-best time of 49.82, breaking 50.00 for the first time. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Smith also earned a PR, clocking a 59.07 and placing fourth. In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Jordan Paul took third as he crossed the finish line at 13.95.
In the women's high jump, sophomore Kristen Meister came in fifth place with a personal-best mark of 5-10.00 (1.78m).
Junior Sean Carey earned a PR in the 800 meters at 1:49.60. That time is the best men's 800-meter time of the season for the Bears and was also an NCAA regional qualifier.
Oregon won the men's team championship with 144.5 points and Arizona State won the women's team title with 186.5 points.
Cal has next week off as it prepares for the NCAA West Regional from May 30-31 on the campus of Cal State Northridge.
