UCLA Baseball Rallies Past Washington State, 7-6, in 10 Innings
May 17, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Bruin shortstop Brandon Crawford scored the game-winning run on a pop-fly base-hit to center field in the bottom of the 10th inning, sending the UCLA baseball team to a dramatic 7-6 victory over Washington State on Saturday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA's 10th-inning rally began after Crawford drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single by designated hitter Cody Decker, and advanced to third base on a balk by Washington State left-hander Ross Humes (4-4). In his second at-bat of the afternoon, center fielder Tim Murphy lifted a fly ball to center field that dropped between the center fielder and second baseman, allowing Crawford to score from third.
Left-hander Brendan Lafferty (3-2) earned his second win in the Bruins' last three games, hurling three scoreless innings in relief. Lafferty allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts without issuing a walk. Humes was tagged with the loss for the Cougars (28-24, 6-14 Pac-10), surrendering two runs and five hits in two innings of relief.
In a back-and-forth contest, Washington State claimed the game's first lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. UCLA added one run in the third inning, cutting the Cougars' lead to 2-1. Washington State and UCLA each traded runs in the fourth inning.
Ahead 3-2, Washington State first baseman Jim Murphy slugged his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left-center field in the top of the sixth inning to hand the Cougars a 5-2 advantage. Murphy finished the ballgame 2-for-4 with two runs and a game-high three RBI.
The Bruins again rallied, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to tie the contest, 5-5. Haerther's solo homer in the sixth cut the Cougars' cushion to 5-3. Cohen led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run, and after reaching on a double to right field, Babineau scored the tying run that inning.
Washington State assumed a 6-5 advantage in the top of the eighth inning. After opening the frame with walks and a fielding error by right-hander Jason Novak to load the bases, the Cougars plated one run with a fielder's choice. UCLA responded in the bottom of the eighth, as Haerther led off the inning with a double to left field, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Crawford and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Decker.
The Bruins and Cougars conclude their three-game Pac-10 series on Sunday at 1 p.m. UCLA will honor its four seniors prior to Sunday's contest, the final regular-season game at Jackie Robinson Stadium this season.
Game Notes: Gabe Cohen became the second Bruin to club two home runs in one game this season - Casey Haerther accomplished the feat against UC Riverside on April 11...Haerther and Cohen are tied for the team lead with nine home runs...Cody Decker has gone 5-for-11 (.455) in the Bruins' last three games, wins against UC Irvine and Washington State...right-hander Charles Brewer surrendered five runs and nine hits in five.
