TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona baseball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its regular season with a series-sweeping 11-4 win over Utah Valley at Kindall Field on Sunday.
The victory improved the Wildcats to 34-15 for the season, 21-3 at home and 26-5 against non-conference opponents. Utah Valley dropped to 14-34 overall for the year and to 0-8 all-time against Arizona with the loss.
The Wildcats, who rapped out 15 hits on the day, jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after scoring three runs apiece in the bottom of the first and second innings. The Cats tacked on a single run in the third and answered UVU's two-run fourth with another run in the bottom of the frame and two more in the fifth.
Colt Sedbrook continued his late season offensive surge by going 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored on Sunday. The senior extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine straight game and is batting .545 (18 for 33) with five doubles, 11 RBI and five runs scored during that span.
Classmate C.J. Ziegler, who saw his 18-game hitting streak come an end on Saturday, bounced back by going 3 for 5 with his team-leading 16th home run of the year. The second-year Wildcat is now tied for ninth on the single season home run list at UA.
Junior Jon Gaston hit his 11th home run of the season, UA's ninth homer in the three game series with the Wolverines, and finished the contest 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound junior starter Eric Berger (6-3) allowed just two runs on two hits over five innings to pick up his sixth win of the year. The left-hander struck out five and walked just one.
UVU starter Bryan Smith (2-5) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
Arizona will return to action next weekend when it hosts Stanford for a three-game series at Kindall Field. First pitch for the series opener on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
