TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona hit five home runs, including a school record-tying three by C.J. Ziegler, senior Colt Sedbrook continued his late season offensive surge and the Wildcat bullpen dominated over the final four innings in UA's 10-4 win over Utah Valley at Kindall Field on Friday.
The victory improved the Wildcats to 32-15 overall for the season and 19-3 in home games, while UVU dropped to 14-32 with the loss.
Ziegler, who finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBI and three runs scored, hit back-to-back solo homers with Jon Gaston to lead off the third, smashed his career-best 14th homer of the season on a solo shot in the fourth and moved into a tie for 10th on the single season list at UA with his 15th blast of the year on a two-run homer in the eighth.
His three homers made him the seventh player in school history to do so in a single game. Teammate Dillon Baird accomplished the feat earlier this season against USC to make the duo the only ones to equal the mark in the same season.
Sophomore Mike Weldon added to the power barrage with his first career home run, a two-run shot in Arizona's five-run third.
Sedbrook, who was hitting .277 just three games ago, followed up a 5 for 6 outing at Cal last Sunday by going 3 for 3 on Friday to raise his batting average to .317 for year. The senior infielder drove in one and collected a double in the win.
On the mound, Arizona's relief corps of Ryan Perry, Daniel Schlereth and Jason Stoffel shut down the UVU offense to just one hit over the final four innings. The trio struck out a combined seven batters over the four shutout frames.
Perry, who entered the game in the sixth inning with no outs and runners on second and third in a 7-4 ball game, struck out the first two batters he faced and ended the Wolverines' last scoring threat of the evening on a grounder to short. The right-hander punched out another batter in seventh before giving way to Schlereth and Stoffel in the eighth and ninth innings.
The left-handed relief ace and the right-handed closer finished with a pair of strikeouts in one inning of work apiece to wrap up the victory.
UA starter Preston Guilmet (6-3) picked up his sixth win of the year in five innings of work. The right-hander allowed four runs - two earned - on 10 hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
UVU starter Dan Christensen was charged with the loss after allowing six runs - four earned - on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Arizona and Utah Valley will meet up for game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Left-hander David Coulon is the scheduled starter for the Wildcats.
