Cats Open Tourney Friday Morning
May 15, 2008
Arizona's NCAA Softball Championships game Friday against the Canisius Golden Griffins in the Hempstead, N.Y., Regional will be carried live today via a radio audio stream produced by the Canisius athletics department.
Game time is noon EDT or 9 a.m. Tucson time (MST/PDT). Arizona is the designated home team for their first game.
The Cats pit their five-game winning streak against Canisius' eight-game streak which gave the Griffs a school-record 38 victories (38-12). Arizona is 36-16 entering NCAA play, its 22nd consecutive tour of postseason competition. UA is two-time defending NCAA Division I champion, too.
One question for UA is which of the 36 different lineups employed by interim head coach Larry Ray this year will be used? The smart guess is the one that helped Arizona close out the year with some good success in the past weeks:
Arizona has won 19 of 21 first-round games in its lengthy NCAA Championships experience, but Canisius brings its own confidence with the regular season and Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championships. The league title was its 11th overall.
The winner of Friday's opener plays the winner of the game following between host Hofstra and Long Island University, in a game scheduled for 10 a.m. (7 a.m. MST/PDT) Saturday morning. The loser of the UA-Canisius game plays the loser of the Hofstra-LIU game at 12:30 p.m. (9:30 MST) in the initial elimination contest of the Regional.
