Clayton Selected As ITA National Rookie of the Year

STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman tennis standout Alex Clayton was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2008 National Rookie of the Year, as announced by the ITA. After earning the ITA West Regional Rookie of the Year award just a week ago, he was chosen over the seven other regional winners as the best newcomer in the nation.
The seventh-ranked Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native has occupied the No. 1 singles spot on the courts for the Cardinal for a majority of the year and has gone 26-8 overall, 17-6 in dual matches, and is 15-7 against nationally-ranked opponents.
At the ITA National Indoor Championships in November, he beat No. 65 Dominic Inglot (Virginia), 6-1, 7-6(5), No. 31 Bassam Beidas (Pepperdine), 6-2, 6-4, and No. 10 Greg Ouellette (Florida), 6-3, 6-4, before falling to top-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Virginia) in a close semifinal match, 6-4, 6-4.
During the spring he won 11 out of 13 matches from January 25 to March 28, playing three contests at No. 2 singles and the rest at the top spot. On February 2, he defeated No. 9 Robert Farah (USC), 6-3, 6-1.
Clayton will be participating in the NCAA Singles Championships as the only representative from the Stanford men's side in Tulsa, Okla. beginning on May 21.
Other finalists for ITA National Rookie of the Year included: Eddie Bourchier (Penn State), Guillermo Gomez (Georgia Tech), JP Smith (Tennessee), Austen Childs (Louisville), Victor Kolik (Tulsa), Bruno Rosa (Rice), and Andrey Potapkin (Idaho).
