Women of Troy Varsity Eight headed to NCAA Championships

The Women of Troy will be going back to familiar territory, Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. May 30-June 1 to participate in the NCAA Championships. The Women of Troy make the Championships as an at-large varsity eight boat selection. USC knows Lake Natoma well because they participated in the Head of the American Regatta on this course in October 2007, spent spring break training there and finished up Pac-10 Championships this past weekend on May 18 at Lake Natoma.
The NCAA Championships consists of 12 teams which must field a varsity eight boat, second varsity eight boat and varsity four boat. In addition to the 12 team entries, four at large varsity eight boats are chosen.
The varsity eight crew has consistently been ranked in the top twenty in the Collegiate Rowing Association/USRowing Poll. In the most recent poll from the week of May 14th, the Women of Troy were ranked twelfth. The highest the crew was ranked was fourth in the pre-season poll of the week of March 14th.
The twelve teams that will be present at the NCAA Div. I Championships will be Brown, California, Harvard, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, Washington State, Wisconsin and Yale. The four at-large eight boats chosen were USC, Clemson, Michigan and Stanford.
The Women of Troy made the NCAA Championships as a team in 2007 and finished in fifth place overall. In the grand final for the varsity eight, the USC crew finished in third place. The second varsity eight won the petite final, as did the varsity four.
