UCLA Players Advance at NCAA Individual Championships

Tulsa, Okla. - Four out of five UCLA players posted first-round victories in the NCAA singles draw on Wednesday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
In the men's draw, Bruin senior Harel Srugo began his quest for an NCAA singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Louisville's Austen Childs in the first round. He will meet eighth-seeded Alex Clayton of Stanford in the second round on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Srugo defeated Clayton, 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 in UCLA's 6-1 dual-match victory over Stanford back on April 5.
In the women's singles draw, three out five Bruin players posted first-round wins to advance to Thursday's second round. Eighth-seeded Riza Zalameda was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Indiana State's Jennifer Migan. Clemson's Carol Salge will be Zalameda's opponent in the second round tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Andrea Remynse and Tracy Lin were also winners on Wednesday. Remynse downed Duke's Ellah Nze, 6-4, 6-4, setting up a showdown with Fresno State's Melanie Gloria, a 9-16 seed, at 11:30 a.m. Lin pulled off a slight upset by defeating 9-16 seeded Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 6-3, 6-4. Lin is scheduled to face North Carolina's Katrina Tsang at Noon.
The only player who did not make it out of the first round on Wednesday was sophomore Yasmin Schnack, who was beaten by Notre Dame's Kelcy Tefft, 7-6(5), 7-5.
Doubles play begins tomorrow. Lin and Zalameda make up the No. 1 seeded team in the doubles draw.
