May 22, 2008
Tulsa, Okla. - UCLA's Riza Zalameda and Tracy Lin each won their second-round singles matches and then teamed together to post a first-round doubles victory on Thursday at the NCAA Championships held at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Zalameda, the No. 8 seed in the singles draw, came back from a set down to defeat Clemson's Carol Salge, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Next up is a meeting with Cal's Claire Ilcinkas in Friday's round of 16. If Zalameda can win that match, she will likely meet up with top-seeded Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas in the quarterfinals. Zalameda and Miseviciute met in the quarterfinals of the team championships last week, splitting sets before play was suspended after UCLA had clinched the win.
Lin downed North Carolina's Katrina Tsang, 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday. She will face Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell in the round of 16 on Friday. McDowell narrowly edged South Carolina's Gira Schofield, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in her second-round match.
After their singles wins, Lin and Zalameda teamed together to defeat Northwestern's Lauren Lui/Georgia Rose, 6-3, 6-4 in their opening-round doubles match. The top-seeded Bruin duo will meet Miami's Romy Farah/Laura Vallverdu in Friday's round of 16.
Two UCLA players dropped second-round singles matches on Thursday. Harel Srugo was beaten by Stanford's Alex Clayton, 6-3, 7-6(7). Srugo had a set point up 7-6 in the second set tiebreaker, however Clayton won the next three points to take the match. Freshman Andrea Remynse was forced to withdraw from her match against Fresno State's Melanie Gloria due to a sore shoulder. Gloria was leading 4-3 in the first set when Remynse retired.
