BERKELEY, Calif. - Left-hander Tim Murphy struck out 10 hitters in a complete-game shutout Friday afternoon, leading the UCLA baseball team past No. 15 California, 8-0, at Evans Diamond. Murphy (5-6) notched his second consecutive victory and extended his scoreless streak to 16.2 innings.
The Bruins (30-24, 12-10) took sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 standings by scoring all eight runs with two outs. UCLA scored twice in the top of the third and broke the game open with a six-run seventh.
California right-hander Tyson Ross (7-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs and six hits in 6.2 innings. Ross registered six strikeouts and issued four walks. The Golden Bears were led at the plate by first baseman David Cooper, who was 2-for-4 with one double and one single.
The Bruins became the first team this season to shut out California (32-18-2, 11-11 Pac-10). With the win, UCLA reached the 30-win plateau during the regular season for the third consecutive year.
UCLA was led at the plate by catcher Brent Dean, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Dean registered both of his base-hits in the Bruins' six-run inning. Second baseman Alden Carrithers went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs, and shortstop Brandon Crawford was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
The Bruins claimed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis led off the frame with a double down the left-field line and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Blair Dunlap. Haerther grounded a double down the right-field line, allowing Curtis to score from second. Crawford's two-out single up the middle plated first baseman Casey Haerther, who scored a game-high two runs.
UCLA added six runs in the top of the seventh inning to assume an 8-0 lead. Carrithers belted a two-run, two-out homer to left field after Dean led off the inning with a single. Haerther drew a walk, moved to third on a single up the middle by Crawford and scored on a single through the right side by right fielder Brady Dolan. Designated hitter Ryan Babineau drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Crawford to score UCLA's sixth run. Dean followed his second base-hit of the inning, sending home Dolan and outfielder Mickey Weisser.
