PULLMAN, Wash. - Jim Murphy went 4-for-4 with his 16th home run of the season Friday as the Washington State Cougars beat the USC Trojans, 8-5, in the Pac-10 Conference series opener. Matt Way went the distance for the Cougars and shut out the Trojans for the final six innings after USC scored five runs off him in the first three innings.
Day allowed five runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Tommy Milone (6-6) also threw a complete game, but allowed eight runs on 12 hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
With the win, Washington State (29-25, 7-15) put a dent into USC's (27-27, 10-12) postseason hopes after the Trojans had won a season-high five straight games.
USC jumped out with four runs in the first. Grant Green and Hector Rabago recorded RBI singles before Anthony Vasquez hit a two-run single. WSU changed the momentum in the second with Paul Lagreid hammered a two-run shot to left to make it a 4-2 lead for the Trojans. Lagreid finished with a 3-for-4 night with the home run and adding a double.
Down by three in the third, the Cougars used four consecutive hits to pace the rally capped by Michael Baker's RBI double. Alex Burg later hit a ground out that scored Jared Prince to tie the game at five apiece.
Both starters kept the opposing teams scoreless through the middle innings before Washington State used the long ball to finish the win. Murphy's solo shot gave WSU the lead in the seventh and Shea Vucinich's two-run homer extended the lead to three runs before Way closed it out in the ninth.
The series continues tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday (May 25) at noon. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
