Washington State Ends USC's Postseason Hopes With 4-2 Victory
May 24, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - Jayson Miller allowed just one run over 7 2/3 innings to lead the Washington State Cougars for the 4-2 win over the USC Trojans. The Cougars clinched the Pac-10 Conference series with their second straight win, effectively ending the Trojans' postseason hopes.
The Trojans (27-28, 10-13) got 11 hits off Miller, but were unable to get any runs except for a solo home run in the fourth by junior center fielder Nick Buss. Miller improved to 8-1 on the season.
Washington State (30-25, 8-15) scored twice in the second to take the lead. Greg Lagreid was hit by a Ryan Cook pitch and later scored on Shea Vucinich's RBI single. Simi Reynolds scored when Travis Coulter hit a sacrifice bunt to first for the Cougars' second run.
In the seventh, USC led off with back-to-back singles by Derek Perren and Anthony Vasquez. Hector Rabago's sacrifice attempt was popped up as Paul Gran made a diving catch for the first out. Mike Roskopf then hit a long single off the fence in right, but a perfect relay throw got Perren at the plate for the second out. Vucinich then made a diving snare of Billy Pinkerton's ground ball to end the inning.
WSU countered with a run in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Trojans had another chance in the eighth. Robert Stock led off with a double and moved to third on Buss' long flyout. Roberto Lopez hit a ground ball back to Miller, who caught Stock in a rundown for the second out. Grant Green then singled and Perren walked to load the bases before Ross Humes came in and struck out Vasquez to hold the lead.
Despite giving up a home run in the ninth to Rabago, Humes then struck out Roskopf and Pinkerton before getting Stock to hit a short pop up to second to earn his sixth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The season finale for both teams will take place tomorrow at noon. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
