May 28, 2008
Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA tennis players Mathieu Dehaine and Riza Zalameda were named spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the Pacific-10 Conference on Wednesday. The award, which is given to one athlete from 10 different spring sports, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
Dehaine carries a 3.81 GPA as a Business-Econ/Math & Applied Science double-major. He recently helped the Bruins post an impressive 25-2 overall record in 2008, reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Championships. Listed at No. 40 in the current ITA Singles Rankings, Dehaine finished his senior season with a 28-8 overall singles record, including a 21-4 mark in dual-match play, seeing most of his time at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. He also played No. 2 doubles with partner Holden Seguso, going 18-6 overall. He was recently named a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection.
Zalameda, who owns a 3.40 cumulative grade point average as an Anthropology major, recently led the women's tennis team to its first NCAA Championship, as the Bruins defeated Cal, 4-0 in the title match in Tulsa, Okla. Zalameda, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of this year's team tournament, then went on to capture the NCAA Doubles crown with teammate Tracy Lin. Zalameda also reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw in Tulsa. She is one of just six four-time All-Americans in UCLA women's tennis history, and was also recently selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Senior Player of the Year. She was a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection.
