May 29, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA second baseman Alden Carrithers was named an All-Pac-10 Conference selection Thursday, and seven other Bruins gained All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades. Carrithers led UCLA during the regular season with a .380 batting average and .490 on-base percentage.
Carrithers, the Bruins' senior second baseman, started 55 of 56 regular-season games, compiling 15 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 45 RBI and 46 runs. The Portland, Ore., resident led all Bruins with 17 stolen bases in 23 attempts. Late last week, Carrithers was named one of 50 semifinalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award.
An All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection one year ago, Carrithers currently ranks fifth in the Pac-10 with a .380 batting average and has posted the third-highest on-base percentage (.490). No Bruin has finished a season with a higher average since Brian Baron batted .443 in 2001. Carrithers' .490 on-base percentage is the highest at UCLA since Troy Glaus finished the 1997 season with a .520 mark.
Crawford and Curtis each started all 56 regular-season games, posting .296 batting averages. Crawford belted five home runs and logged a team-leading 48 runs. Curtis registered the team lead with 42 walks, getting on base at a .426 clip.
Murphy is currently tied with Washington's Nick Haughian for the Pac-10 lead in strikeouts (107). The left-hander from Vista, Calif., has earned the last two Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors and enters NCAA Regional play with a 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings streak.
Lafferty, the Bruins' most veteran player, is tied with two other Pac-10 pitchers for the conference lead in pitching appearances (31). The left-hander from Riverside, Calif., has logged a 3-3 record, a 4.00 ERA and three saves. Lafferty has totaled a career-high 54 strikeouts in 63.0 innings.
Haerther recorded UCLA's most impressive individual performance earlier this spring, setting UCLA and Pac-10 single-game records with a 7-for-7 effort at then-No. 6 Arizona on March 29. Haerther completed the regular season having batted .326 with team leads in home runs (10), doubles (22) and RBI (49). The sophomore first baseman from Chatsworth, Calif., is tied for sixth place on UCLA's single-season doubles list (22) with current major-leaguer Garrett Atkins.
Brewer and Brooks served as the Bruins No. 2 and 3 pitchers all season, posting won-loss records of 8-4 and 6-2, respectively. Brewer's 94.0 innings pitched ranks second-most on the team - the sophomore right-hander from Paradise Valley, Ariz., has logged a 5-2 mark in eight Pac-10 starts. Brooks has totaled 62 strikeouts in 69.2 innings, posting a 4-1 record in Pac-10 action.
UCLA returns to action against Virginia on Friday, May 30, when it opens play in the NCAA Fullerton Regional at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field. The Bruins earned their third consecutive NCAA postseason berth for the first time in school history on Monday morning. All games at the NCAA Fullerton Regional will be broadcast on ESPNU. Game time Friday is slated for 4 p.m.
