Wildcats prepare for thrower's meet
May 23, 2008
The thrower's feature plays host to some of the most promising athletes in the country and the world. Not only this, but it provides many people a chance to get in some final competition before the Olympic Trials next month.
The UA will have its own fair share of athletes in the competition, including Zack Lloyd. Lloyd set the UA school record in the shot put at the Pacific-10 Conference Championship last weekend where he claimed the conference title in the event. His throw of 21.03m (69' 0') is currently tops in the nation collegially this outdoor season and fourth for all American throwers to date.
The mark also guaranteed Lloyd a spot in a heat with the best throwers in the country when he competes at the Olympic Trials in Eugene beginning June 27.
The only UA athlete on the women's side who will be competing is sophomore javelin thrower Leigh Bernstein, who is hoping for one final big mark to back up the 44.34m throw she had to earn a regional qualifying bid.
Other notable competition in the meet will include several athletes who train right here in Tucson, including Olympian and former UA student-athlete Esko Mikkola in the javelin. Adam Kuehl, one of the premier athletes at the UA last season will also compete in the discus event. Two-time Olympic medalist in the shot put John Godina will also compete in the discus.
The rest of the UA athletes will have the weekend off as they prepare for the NCAA West Regional Championships which will take place in Northridge, Calif. next weekend as they hope to earn spots in the NCAA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa next month.
