Bruins Fall to Arizona State
May 30, 2008
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior Anjelica Selden struck out nine for the second straight game, but the second-seeded Bruins fell to sixth-seeded Arizona State 4-0 on Friday at the Women's College World Series at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Bruins (51-8) fall into the loser's bracket and will take on the winner of the Florida-Virginia Tech game on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT. The Sun Devils improve to 63-5 on the year and will have Saturday off before playing again on Sunday.
The Sun Devils blew a golden opportunity to score in the bottom of the first inning. Kaitlin Cochran was walked intentionally, and after Jackie Vasquez bunted a ball to the left of the circle for an infield single, the Bruins gave Krista Donnenwirth an intentional free pass to load the bases. But Selden escaped the jam, getting Lesley Rogers to line out back to her, striking out Mindy Cowles and inducing Kristen Miller into an inning-ending pop up to end the threat.
An error in the bottom of the third gave the Sun Devils a pair of runs. Cochran was walked intentionally and Vasquez walked to put a pair aboard. Selden struck out Donnenwirth for the first out, but Rogers singled to center and when the ball went to the wall, Cochran and Vasquez came in to score to make it 2-0. However, Rogers was gunned down at home plate on a relay from senior Krista Colburn to shortstop Harrison to junior Jennifer Schroeder to keep it a two-run game.
In the fifth, the Sun Devils added two more runs. Cochran was walked intentionally and Vasquez reached first on a fielder's choice sacrifice. Donnenwirth then singled up the middle to plate Cochran to make it 3-0. Vasquez moved to third on the play and came around to score on an error to increase the advantage to 4-0.
Katie Burkhart struck out eight in a four-hit shutout for Arizona State.
