Morgan Breaks School Record At NCAA West Regionals

NORTHRIDGE - Behind junior Katie Morgan's record-setting performance in the pole vault, California got off to a good start at the NCAA West Regional today at the Matador Track Complex on the campus of Cal State Northridge. The Cal men ended day-one action in fourth place with 16.50 points. The Cal women finished Friday's competition in eighth place with eight points.
Morgan posted the new school record again with a mark of 13-11.75 (4.26m), which ranks seventh in the nation. She surpassed her old mark of 13-9.25. Morgan took second overall and will advance to the NCAA Championships. Morgan earned eight points for the Cal women with her performance.
Senior All-American Alysia Johnson continued her quest to repeat as the NCAA champion in the 800 meters. She qualified for tomorrow's final with a time of 2:07.85 in today's preliminary race.
Freshman Cherrelle Garrett clocked a new personal best in the 100, logging a time of 11.41 to advance to tomorrow's final. Garrett's time also tied for the second best in the Pac-10. She already held the second-best time in school history with her previous personal best of 11.44. Garrett also qualified for tomorrow's final in the 200 after recording a time of 23.91 in today's prelims.
On the men's side, both junior Martin Maric and sophomore Ryan Young qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Young took second with a mark of 229-09 (70.03m), while Maric finished in fifth with a mark of 220-03 (67.14m). Young earned eight points and Maric earned four.
Senior All-American Ed Wright also advanced to the NCAA Championships in the high jump. Wright took fourth and posted a mark of 6-11 (2.11m). Wright earned 4.50 points for the Bears in the process.
Among the other Bears who advanced to tomorrow's finals were junior Jake Hanson in the 400-meter hurdles, junior Evelyn Smith in the women's 400-meter hurdles, the men's 4x100-meter relay, senior David Torrence and junior Mark Matusak in the 1500 and senior Thomas Mack in the 110-meter hurdles.
The NCAA West Regional concludes tomorrow.
