Sun Devils Battle Aggies Tonight in NCAA Softball Championship Game 1
June 2, 2008
Led by the stellar pitching of Katie Burkhart and the live bat of Jackie Vasquez, the Arizona State Sun Devils (69-5) have advanced to the Championship of the Women's College World Series. Game 1 of the best-of-three series against the Texas A&M Aggies will be broadcast live on ESPN2 tonight at 5 p.m.
Arizona State is the only undefeated team in the NCAA Championship at 8-0 and has outscored its opponents 41-3. The win Sunday also marked the first time ASU has won three games in a WCWS and the first time they have advanced to the championship game/series.
Ace Katie Burkhart has compiled a stellar 39-5 record heading into the championship series, including a 8-0 record in the postseason and 30 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched in the WCWS.
Jackie Vasquez provided the offense in Sunday's clinching victory with a three-run home run which gave the Sun Devils their 3-1 victory. The Sun Devils top hitter, and two-time reigning Pac-10 Player of the Year, Katie Cochran has garnered an inordinate amount of respect at the plate, being intentionally walked in almost every plate appearance forcing her teammates to step up and they've done just that.
Game 2 will be on Tuesday, June 3 and Game 3 (if necessary) will be on Wednesday. All of the games are at 5 p.m. and broadcast on ESPN2.
