Football Camp Opens in Two Months!
June 3, 2008
TUCSON - Arizona head coach Mike Stoops opens his fifth UA football season Aug. 4 -- but you couldn't tell that to returning players.
They're being led through four days of workouts each week by football strength coaches Corey Edmond, Brian Odom and Shawn Farria.
Arizona newcomers will officially report Aug. 2, although incoming freshman and transfers may arrive early to attend Summer Session classes and get a head start on both school and conditioning.
The Wildcats return 39 lettermen this year, the bulk of those on offense where 10 starters are back, notably quarterback Willie Tuitama and wide receiver Mike Thomas. The latter was a first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference selection a year ago and both combined to help the Cats set about a dozen passing records.
The defense returns three starters -- senior linebacker Ronnie Palmer, senior safety Nate Ness and junior safety Cam Nelson. The biggest losses are Jim Thorpe Award-winning cornerback Antoine Cason and first-team All-Pac-10 pick linebacker Spencer Larsen. They and DT Lionel Dotson and corner Wilrey Fontenot were drafted by NFL teams in April. Departed seniors Jason Parker and Louis Holmes also were picked up in free-agent contracts from UA's defense.
The first day of fall camp is Monday, Aug. 4, with the team to work at the university's nearby Rincon Vista recreationsl field, as well as on the campus practice fields.
