USC Women Receive Pac-10, All-America Awards
June 4, 2008
The USC women's tennis team has placed another pair of Women of Troy on ITA All-American lists for 2008, along with a trio of Trojans earning All-Pac-10 honors on the year. Led by Amanda Fink's All-America accolades for singles and doubles and All-Pac-10 First Team selection, USC has a new All-American and Pac-10 honoree in Gabriela Niculescu along with four-time All-Pac-10 selection Lindsey Nelson earning honors this year.
A junior, Fink claims her second career All-American nod. She was a selection in singles in 2006, and returns to the ITA All-America list this season as a singles and doubles selection. Her third straight All-Pac-10 accolades come as well this year, as Fink has her second All-Pac-10 First Team pick as well as a place among the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention honorees this season. The junior psychology major knocked her way to a team-best singles mark of 38-10, reaching the Pac-10 Singles title match and on to the NCAA Singles Quarterfinals. Finishing the season as the nation's No. 5 ranked player, Fink hit her 100th career singles win this year, holding an overall record of 102-34 as she sets up for her senior season. In doubles, Fink teamed up successfully with Niculescu, winning the 2008 Pac-10 Doubles Championship and reaching the NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals as a 5-8 seed. Fink and Niculescu went 35-11 overall in doubles and finish the season ranked No. 4 in the nation.
For Niculescu, her first season of competition with the Women of Troy was a great one. Named the West Region's ITA Player to Watch, the sophomore went 31-12 in singles play, reaching the NCAA Singles Round of 32 and finishing the season ranked No. 48 in the nation. Niculescu's powerful play with Fink in doubles pushed the sophomore to ITA All-America honors for doubles. Her first Pac-10 honors also followed, as Niculescu earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention as well as Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention for her achievements on and off the court this year.
A force to reckon with throughout her career at Troy, senior Lindsey Nelson winds down her time as a Trojan with a string of honors from the Pac-10. Now a four-time All-Pac-10 selection, Nelson comes away with All-Pac-10 honorable mention following a No. 49 final rank and 14-15 overall record in singles this season, in which she made her fourth straight trip to the NCAA Singles Championships and reached the Round of 32. Also a strong scholar-athlete, Nelson has garnered her third consecutive Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention as a creative writing major. She notched her 100th career singles win this season and finishes her standout Trojan career as a three-time All-American, a two-time NCAA Singles finalist and two-time Honda Award finalist who holds a 105-40 career record in singles at USC.
