Cal Travels to Scotland June 14-22
June 5, 2008
BERKELEY, Calif. - The California women's golf team will travel to Scotland June 14-22 to play some of the country's finest golf courses, sightsee and enjoy the hospitality of two Golden Bears' families.
'Taking the team to Scotland has been a dream of ours for years, as it's the homeland for three key players in our program's history - Anne Walker, Vikki Laing and Roseanne Niven,' Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. 'It will be special to have the team meet Anne and Rosie's family and play on the courses where they each grew up. Giving the players the opportunity to play a different kind of golf and to play in the country where the sport originated will be a fantastic experience. This trip would not have been possible without the support of Ginger and John Lamberson.'
Cal's adventure includes stops in Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Troon and Glasgow. The Bears will go on a ghosts and ghouls tour, see Edinburgh Castle and visit the University of St. Andrews, the oldest university in Scotland which dates back to 1413, among other tourist destinations. Cal will also sample the culinary specialties of the region, including the famous fish and chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar.
With Scotland known as the birthplace of golf, the Bears are eager to play some of the country's well-known historic courses. The itinerary includes Kingsbarns Golf Links, Lundin Links, Elie Golf Club, Crieff Golf Club the Western Gailes Golf Club and St. Andrews.
Interspersed on the trip are activities with the family of Niven and outgoing Cal assistant coach Anne Walker (assumes duties as UC Davis head coach July 1). Niven is a junior from Perth, Scotland, and Walker hails from Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Additionally, Niven, seniors Allison Goodman and Shannon Yocum, and sophomore Pia Halbig will compete in the Ladies British Amateur Championships June 11-15. The official portion of the Bears' team trip begins June 14.
Under NCAA rules, teams are allowed to take a foreign trip every four years.
During the 2007-08 season, Cal earned its ninth consecutive NCAA regional selection and won two tournaments.
