Cal Varsity 8 Reaches Friday Semifinal at IRA Regatta

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. - California's No. 5-ranked varsity eight won its heat on the first day of the 106th annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta on Thursday on the Cooper River to qualify for Friday's semifinal round. The Golden Bears' varsity eight won a heat that included second-place Cornell (5:52.196) and third-place Princeton (6:05.358). Pennsylvania (6:05.358), Holy Cross (6:07.484) and Gonzaga (6:13.046) rounded out the heat. Cal, seeking its 16th crown at the men's rowing national championships, claimed the fastest time of the four varsity eight heats today.

In all, the Bears qualified for five of six Friday semifinals based on results on Thursday. As with the varsity eight, the Bears qualified for the semifinals in the second varsity eight and freshman eight after winning heats in both of those events.

Cal posted the fastest time (5:56.777) of the four second varsity eight heats to defeat second-place Brown (6:00.684) and third-place Harvard (6:04.377). George Washington (6:19.385) and the U.S. Naval Academy (6:23:752) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in Cal's heat.

The Bears' freshman eight won its race with the second-fastest time (5:58.343) of the four freshman eight heats. Brown (6:03.944) was second in Cal's heat. Washington (5:56.162) claimed the top time in the freshman eights today.

In the open four, Cal took second (6:47.038) in its heat to Cornell (6:42.024). The Bears, who move on to the open four repechage round on Friday, had the open four heats' third-fastest time, as Harvard won its race with a 6:43.151.

Cal qualified for two more semifinals via time trials. The Bears' varsity four with coxswain took seventh in its time trial (5:42.100), while the Bears' freshman four was second (5:48.501) in its time trial. Washington won both (5:37.900 V4+ and 5:43.138 F4) races.

The first event for Cal tomorrow - its open four repechage - starts at 8 a.m. ET. The Bears will also row in a freshman four semifinal at 9 a.m. ET, second varsity eight semifinal (time TBA), varsity eight semifinal (time TBA), freshman eight seminal (time TBA) and varsity four with coxswain (2 p.m. ET) on Friday.
