Josh Satin Drafted in the Sixth Round by the New York Met

June 5, 2008

BERKELEY, CALIF. -

University of California senior second baseman Josh Satin, who had one of the best offensive seasons in school history, became the third Golden Bear baseball player to selected in the 2008 Major League First-Year Player Draft when he was drafted in the sixth round Thursday by the New York Mets.

Satin joins junior first baseman David Cooper, who was selected in the first round by the Toronto Blue Jays, and junior right-hander Tyson Ross, a native of Oakland who was drafted in the second round by the Oakland A's, as Cal players selected in the 2008 draft.

A third-team All-American in Collegiate Baseball and a first-team All-Pac-10 selection, Satin hit the game-winning homer in the 10th inning in his last home at-bat at Evans Diamond versus UCLA on May 25. He was also a semifinalist for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award and the Wallace Award as the national player of the year candidate and ended the year batting a team-best .379 with 11 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs and 52 RBI. Satin is currently eighth in the Pac-10 in total bases (141), seventh in runs scored (56), fourth in slugging percentage (.723), third in walks (47) and second in on-base percentage (.500).

Satin hit safely in the first 22 games this season and had a school-record a 27-game hitting streak from May 20, 2007-Mar. 29, 2008. He was the Mar. 4 Pac-10 Player of the Week when Cal defeated three ranked teams at the University of San Diego Tournament, going 10-for-19 (.526) with a double, two home runs and eight RBI.

In 2005, Satin was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and first-team All-Pac-10 when he batted .348 with 15 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 40 RBI. He joins Xavier Nady (1998-2000) as the only Cal players to have earned both Freshman All-America and regular All-America honors.
