BERKELEY, CALIF. -

The University of California baseball program had three players selected Friday during the second day of the 2008 Major League First-Year Player Draft. Junior left-hander Craig Bennigson was drafted in the ninth round by the Colorado Rockies, junior left fielder/catcher Charlie Cutler was drafted in the 14th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, and junior right-hander Matt Gorgen was picked in the 16th round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Bennigson, from Benicia, Calif., was 4-5 with a 6.75 ERA in 20 appearances this season. He had 59 strikeouts in 65.1 innings, picking up victories May 10 at Stanford (6.0 innings, seven hits, two runs, two walks, four strikeouts), March 8 at Minnesota (6.1 innings, five hits, one run, four walks, career-high 10 strikeouts), March 1 at San Diego State (career-high 8.0 innings, four hits, three runs, four walks, seven strikeouts) and February 23 versus Utah Valley (7.0 innings, four hits, one run, one walk, six strikeouts). In 2007, Bennigson was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 after going 5-3 with a 3.34 ERA, and currently has 133 career strikeouts in 171.2 innings.

San Francisco native and team captain Cutler (Lowell High School) batted a career-best .321 this season, including .326 versus Pac-10 competition. He had six doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI despite out sitting out 14 games Feb. 23-Mar. 18 after breaking the little finger of his right hand. Cutler ended up starting the last 40 games in the outfield after beginning the year behind the plate. His highlights included hitting the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning May 9 at Stanford, and going a career-high 5-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI May 6 versus UC Davis. Cutler was selected both honorable mention All-Pac-10, and honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic this season, majoring in political science.

Gorgen, Cal's top closer, was honorable mention All-Pac-10 this season, as well as being on the watch list for NCBWA Stopper of the Year award, and a preseason All-American in Collegiate Baseball and Rivals.com. He finished the year 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA and nine saves (third in Pac-10) in 28 appearances (sixth in Pac-10). Gorgen also had 44 strikeouts in 41.1 innings and was named the May 13 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week after picking up a win May 9 (three strikeouts in 1.1 innings) and a save May 10 (one strikeout in 1.0 inning) at Stanford.

A Pac-10 honorable mention selection in both 2007 and 2008, Gorgen is currently second on the school's all-time list with 20 career saves. His 88 career appearances are eighth on Cal's all-time list. Gorgen's twin brother, Scott, is a standout junior right-handed starter at UC Irvine, and was drafted in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bennigson, Cutler and Gorgen join junior first baseman David Cooper, who became the third-highest draft pick in Cal baseball history when he was selected in the first round by the Toronto Blue Jays, and was the 17th pick overall, during the opening day of the draft. Also during the first day of the MLB draft, Bear junior right-hander Tyson Ross, a native of Oakland, was drafted in the second round by the Oakland A's and was the 58th pick overall, while senior second baseman Josh Satin was drafted in sixth round by the New York Mets.
