Series Notes: Stanford and Miami meet in Wednesday's elimination game at the College World Series for the first time since 2001, with the chance to face Georgia in the Bracket One Final on the line. Wednesday's meeting marks the fourth time that the Cardinal and the Hurricanes have met in the College World Series, and the fifth time overall that the two schools have met in the postseason. Miami holds a 2-1 edge in the three previous CWS meetings over Stanford. The teams first met in the 1985 College World Series, with the Hurricanes capturing a 17-3 rout, but the Cardinal would get its revenge three years later, downing the 'Canes, 2-1, en route to its second consecutive national title in 1988. Miami would end Stanford's run in the 2001 edition with a 12-1 victory. In the regular season, Miami has won all three meetings with Stanford, sweeping a two-game series from April 29-30, 1988, then capturing a 4-3 win at the Pillsbury Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. on April 1, 1990.

    POSTSEASON UPDATE

Stanford Falls To Georgia, Faces Elimination Wednesday Night - After dropping a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to the Georgia Bulldogs Monday night, the Cardinal now fall into the loser's bracket of the College World Series, where it will face the Miami Hurricanes Wednesday evening at 4 p.m. PT at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium. Yet Stanford is no stranger to elimination games this postseason, having won four straight at the Stanford Regional after having dropped its regional opener to UC Davis on May 30. Monday night, the Cardinal jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after three innings against the Bulldogs, but the offense went cold most of the rest of the way, as the Georgia bullpen tossed six scoreless innings the rest of the way. Georgia got runs back in the fourth and sixth innings to get to within one run of the Cardinal at 3-2, and then got a bases-loaded, two-RBI single from Matt Cerione in the seventh to cap the comeback and the 4-3 win. Jason Castro went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, his 14th of the season, for Stanford, while starter Jeffrey Inman, who did not figure in the decision, struck out five and allowed just two runs in a five and a third-inning outing.
