June 20, 2008
UCLA All-American Tiffany Joh advanced to the finals of the 32nd U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championship Friday with a pair of victories in Erin, Wis.
In her quarterfinal match Friday morning, Joh defeated Lee Lopez, of Whittier, Calif., 2 and 1. With the match all-square through 13, Joh eagled the par-5 14th for a 1-up lead, an advantage she would not relinquish. She then birdied 16 and halved 17 for the narrow win.
In her afternoon semifinal match, Joh raced out to a big lead against Tiffany Lua, 17, of Rowland Heights, Calif., making birdies on six of her first seven holes to take a commanding 6-up lead. She cruised home from there with a 4-anhd-3 win.
'Honestly, I don't even know what happened,' said Joh of her hot start in the afternoon. 'I wasn't going out there trying to make six birdies. It just happened and I kind of stayed out of my own way.'
In 2006, Joh won this event at Walking Stick GC in Pueblo, Colo. She played the equivalent of 11-under par golf over 31 holes to defeat Kimberly Kim.
Kono, scheduled to enroll at UCLA in the fall, easily won her quarterfinal match 5&4 against Michelle Shin of Cape Coral, Fla. Kono played holes 9-15 in three-under par while winning five of those holes to seal her victory.
In her semifinal match against Jennifer Song of Korea, Kono lost the 17th with a bogey and conceded a birdie putt at the 18th after flying the green with her approach, thus losing any opportunity to halve the hole.
The championship match is scheduled to begin a 8 a.m. CDT, with the second 18 set to go at 12:30 p.m.
