Stanford Names Six To The Class of 2012
June 24, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's soccer will welcome six newcomers for the 2008 season, as head coach Bret Simon announced the team's Class of 2012 today. The incoming class is composed of three Californians and three Texans who will descend on The Farm for preseason training beginning in August.
Joining the Cardinal is Alexander Binnie (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas), Ben Grafentin (Allen, Texas/Allen HS), Clayton Holz (Houston, Texas/St. John's School), Adoni Levine (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS), Tommy Ryan (Ross, Calif./The Branson School), and Cullen Wilson (La Quinta, Calif./La Quinta HS).
'This is an athletic and talented group,' commented Simon. 'The variety of positions and types of players will make for an interesting team dynamic. The past accomplishments of this group are extraordinary. They will certainly help us grow as a program and compete with the top teams in the country.'
Two of the Texans, Binnie and Grafentin, can play dual positions for the Cardinal as Binnie has experience as both a striker and a midfielder. Grafentin plays more defensively, with the ability to anchor back lines as well as move up into a midfield position.
Binnie played club ball for the nationally-renowned Dallas Texans that recently took the prestigious 2007-08 Disney Showcase title. 'Alexander has great pace, and is an attacking player with great one-v-one ability,' praised Simon. 'He has the ability to be dangerous both in the attacking third and in wide positions.'
Grafentin has been a strong player on the youth scene and his club team, Andromeda, won the 2007 USYSA National Championship. 'Ben is a reliable and talented defensive player, who is intense and very aware of his surroundings,' added Simon. 'He is also a threat on set pieces and scored a goal versus Sao Paulo in the Dallas Cup Super Group.'
The third Texan, Holz, will step in for the Cardinal at midfield. Holz had a stint with the youth National Team, was selected to participate in the Adidas ESP program, and is a mainstay on the Region III ODP team. 'Clayton is a very technical player and a phenomenal passer,' commented Simon. 'He has tremendous vision of the field.'
Stanford inked two Bay Area locals in San Jose native Adoni Levine and Marin County's Tommy Ryan. Levine played for the nationally-rated De Anza Force and was a standout at Leland High School, while Ryan has been plying his trade with the San Francisco Seals soccer club and is a graduate of The Branson School.
'Adoni is an attack-minded midfielder who has tremendous quickness and is a great passer,' offered Simon. 'He has the ability to both create and score goals in the Cardinal attack.'
'Tommy is an athletically powerful and technically clean defender,' remarked Simon. 'He showed especially well at our Cardinal Camp in the summer of 2007.'
Wilson, the sole southern California native to join the team this year, played with the DMS 11 club team, formerly known as the L.A. Rampage, which captured the USYSA Region IV Championship in 2007. Wilson also spent time training with the Sheffield United youth academy in the United Kingdom. 'Cullen has a phenomenal work rate up front and has a propensity to score big goals,' commended Simon. 'He is a true goal scorer and is lethal in the air.'
