Stanford Track And Field Prepares For The U.S. Olympic Trials

June 26, 2008

Eugene, Ore.- The U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field get underway on Friday, June 27 from Hayward Field with a strong Stanford presence. 15 Cardinal alums and six current Stanford student-athletes will compete for the chance to represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The ten day competition concludes Sunday, July 6.

OLYMPIC HISTORY
Stanford track and field is rich in Olympic history with Cardinal athletes winning a total of 20 medals. Most recently Toby Stevenson ('00) won the Olympic Silver Medal in the pole vault at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Bob Mathias ('52) is perhaps Stanford's most famous Olympian in track and field having won Olympic Gold in the decathlon twice, at the 1948 Olympics in London in and in 1952 in Helsinki.

Stevenson is back at the trials this year and will be joined by former Olympians Jonathon Riley, Grant Robison, and Gabe Jennings who will be attempting to qualify for their second Olympic Games as well. Like Stevenson, Riley (5,000 meters) and Robison (1,500 meters) were Olympians in 2004 in Athens, while Jennings was a 2000 Olympian in Sydney, Australia.

2008 TRIALS
Perhaps the best chance for qualification for Stanford comes from Erica McLain who just captured the NCAA title in the triple jump two weeks ago in Des Moines, Iowa. The 14-time All-American and 3-time NCAA Champion will compete in both the long jump and triple jump.

Also coming off All-America efforts at the recent NCAA Championships for the women are Lindsay Allen (3,000 meter steeplechase) and Teresa McWalters (5,000 meters). In the 5,000 meters, McWalters will be joined by Stanford alums Arianna Lambie ('08) and Lauren Fleshman ('03) who have 29 All-America honors between them. The other former Stanford distance runner to compete is Sara Hall, formerly Sara Bei ('05) when she attended Stanford. She will look to join her husband Ryan Hall ('06), the U.S. marathon trials champion, at the Olympic Games.

The other female competitors for Stanford will compete in the throws. Jill Camarena ('04) enters the meet with top ranked throw in the shot put, while Sarah (Hopping) Veress ('05) will compete in the hammer and Summer Pierson ('00) will compete in the discus.

Along with the former Olympians from Stanford, six others will compete in the distances. Ian Dobson, a former NCAA Champion, is entered to double in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. He will be joined in the 10,000 meters by former teammates Louis Luchini ('04) and Brett Gotcher ('07). The other former Cardinal is Jonathan Pierce ('07) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Russell Brown and Garret Heath are coming off the 1,500 meters at the recent NCAA Championships and will compete in the same event at the Olympic Trials.

In the field events Graeme Hoste will join Stevenson in the pole vault. Hoste is a three-time All-American at Stanford. Also competing in a field event is former NCAA Champion Michael Robertson ('05) in the discus.
