BERKELEY, Calif. - California senior Shannon Yocum will travel with the 25th-annual NCAA All-Star tour of Asia June 27-July 14. Last season, Yocum's teammate, Allison Goodman, participated in the event.
Others selected for the 2008 all-star tour include Florida State's Lacey Agnew, Notre Dame's Alejandra Diaz-Calderon, Texas Tech's Megan Dowdy, Princeton's Marlowe Boukis, Indiana's Lauren Harling, Oregon's Cathleen Ward, UCLA's Maiya Tanaka, Oregon State's Marti Burkard and Harvard's Claire Sheldon.
The group will play in various tournaments in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and China and will enjoy sightseeing in each country. The first competition is the U.S. Army Tournament June 29 at Camp Zama Golf Club in Japan, and the tour wraps up with the U.S. All-Stars vs. China Amateur Tournament July 13 at Nansha Golf Course in China.
In other Cal news this summer, junior Roseanne Niven reached the semifinals of the Ladies British Open Amateur Championships, which was held June 11-15 at the North Berwick Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland. Niven advanced to the semifinals with a quarterfinal victory over Arizona State's Azahara Munoz, who won the 2008 NCAA individual title. Niven needed 20 holes and a come-from-behind effort to beat Munoz, 1-up, in match play. The Perth, Scotland, native went two down early but persevered as she has often done during her Cal career.
In the semifinals, Niven fell to eventual champion Anna Nordqvist, 2 and 1. Nordqvist, who also competes for Arizona State, tied for fifth at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
After experiencing success at the British Amateur, Niven has been invited to play in the Oxfordshire Ladies English Open on the Ladies European Tour July 4-6 in Oxfordshire, England.
