Stanford women swimmers compete in Day One of the 2008 USA Olympic Swimming Trials

    Omaha, Neb. - Day one of the 2008 USA Olympic Swimming Trials is in the books, with Stanford women swimmers enjoying a strong showing. Leading the way was Elaine Breeden, who enters tomorrow evening's 100 meter butterfly final with the second fastest qualifying time among the eight finalists at 58.04 seconds. She will be joined in the final by Brooke Bishop, who posted a qualifying time of 58.98.

    Julia Smit turned in a fine performance in her first of five Trials events, falling just shy of her initial Olympic berth by placing third in the finals for the 400 meter Individual Medley (top two swimmers advance to Beijing). The Stanford junior-to-be swam the event in a time of 4:35.73.
