Stanford Baseball Continues to Make Mark at Highest Levels

June 30, 2008

With the calendar nearly at July, and with all 30 Major League clubs reaching the halfway point of the 162-game 2008 season, Stanford baseball is continuing to make an impact on the biggest professional stages. As of June 30, 26 former Cardinal players were active at either the Major or Minor league level, including nine that had seen big league action at some point during the campaign.

Perhaps the most impressive 2008 season to date belongs to outfielder Carlos Quentin, who is tied for the American League lead with a career-high 19 home runs and ranks third in the junior circuit with a career-best 61 RBI. In fact, he went 6-for-14 with two homers and four RBI over the weekend as his AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox posted a three-game sweep over the Cubs.

Veteran right-hander Mike Mussina appears on his way to another All-Star Game appearance for the New York Yankees, as the right-hander is 10-5 with a 3.93 ERA to rank third in the AL for wins. Within the same division, Jeremy Guthrie has played a role in the surprising 41-39 start by the Baltimore Orioles by posting a 3.50 ERA and .239 opponent batting average in 18 starts.

Infielder Eric Bruntlett has been huge for the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies, batting .281 with runners in scoring position while playing every position on the diamond except center field, pitcher and catcher. Elsewhere, Ryan Garko has driven in 39 runs for the Cleveland Indians and Jody Gerut is batting .280 in a San Diego Padres uniform.

Three players have made their Major League debut in 2008, raising the total of Stanford big league alumni to 81. Chris Carter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Boston Red Sox on June 5 vs. Tampa Bay, Jed Lowrie hit at a .310 clip during a 17-game stay in Beantown and Greg Reynolds has picked up a pair of wins in his first 10 starts for the Colorado Rockies.

Former Cardinal players continue to thrive in the Minor Leagues as well. 10 Stanford products are currently at the triple-A level, including: John Gall (third in the Pacific Coast League with 61 RBI for Albuquerque in the Florida organization), John Mayberry, Jr. (.313 avg. with Oklahoma in Texas chain) and Mike Gosling (3-3, seven saves and 3.32 ERA with Toronto's Syracuse club).

Seven members of the 2008 Stanford club that advanced to the College World Series were selected in MLB's First-Year Player Draft; of those, only Erik Davis (Eugene - San Diego) and Sean Ratliff (Brooklyn - New York Mets) have signed and begun their professional careers as of June 30.
