Vandenberg Swims Into Possible Olympic Spot On 4x200m Relay

July 2, 2008

Bruin alum Kim Vandenberg finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:58.02) at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Tuesday, making her eligible for her first Olympic team. The top four finishers automatically qualify for the relay squad, while the fifth and sixth-place finishers could be named to the team later in the week depending on the number of multiple event qualifiers. Usually, six swimmers are taken to the Olympic Games.

Vandenberg also competed in her signature event, the 200 butterfly on Tuesday. She swam the third-best time in the morning session (2:09.37) and then finished fourth in the semifinal with a time of 2:08.86. She will swim for an individual spot on the Olympic team on Thursday evening.

Also on Tuesday, incoming frosh Yasi Jahanshahi was 85th in the 200 fly in a time of 2:19.81.
