A Midsummer Look at Stanford Baseball

July 15, 2008

As Major League Baseball reaches its traditional midway point with tonight's All-Star Game at historic Yankee Stadium, Stanford Baseball is once again prominent among the professional ranks. Former Cardinal slugger Carlos Quentin will be in uniform at the Midsummer Classic, representing the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox. Stanford also added another member to its professional ranks last Friday, when Jason Castro - the 10th overall pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft - signed with the Houston Astros and reported to the club's Tri-City affiliate in the short-season New York-Penn League. All told, 29 former Cardinal players are currently in professional baseball - including eight at the Major League level.

Quentin is enjoying a stellar year during his first campaign in the Windy City, as he has already posted career highs in games (91), at-bats (337), runs (62), hits (93), doubles (16-tied), home runs (22), RBI (70), walks (43) and stolen bases (5). He is second in the American League for both homers (one behind CLE's Grady Sizemore) and RBI, while the White Sox are 54-40 and hold a 1 ½ game division lead.

Castro, who became the first top 10 catcher selected by the Astros since 1983, inked his first professional contract last Friday and drew a walk in his first plate appearance Sunday with the Tri-City ValleyCats. The left-handed hitting backstop led Stanford to the 2008 College World Series, pacing the Cardinal in batting average (.376), hits (105), doubles (18) and RBI (73). He also logged a .996 fielding percentage, while throwing out an impressive 38.3% of attempted base-stealers (31-of-81).

On the Major League stage, veteran right-hander Mike Mussina proved to be the first half ace for the New York Yankees with an 11-6 record and 3.61 ERA in 19 starts. The five-time All-Star is tied for third in the A.L. for wins, and now has 261 career victories.

Infielder Eric Bruntlett has been a jack of all trades for the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies, playing every position on the diamond except center field, pitcher and catcher. Elsewhere, Ryan Garko rebounded from a slow start with the Cleveland Indians by driving in 19 runs in June, and will open the second half with 45 RBI. San Diego's Jody Gerut hit at a .323 clip in June, and is batting .279 in 61 games with the Padres overall.

Three players have made their Major League debut in 2008, raising the total of Stanford Major League alumni to 81. Jed Lowrie, who hit at a .310 clip with the Boston Red Sox in April and May, was recalled to Boston last Friday and played in a pair of contests at Fenway Park over the weekend. Another Red Sox farmhand, Chris Carter, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in his lone Major League game June 5 vs. Tampa Bay. In the National League, Greg Reynolds has picked up a pair of wins in his first 11 starts for the Colorado Rockies.

Former Cardinal players continue to thrive in the minor leagues as well. Nine Stanford products are currently at the Triple-A level, including: Carter (.288 avg., 19 HRs and 66 RBI with Pawtucket), John Gall (.321 avg., 27 2Bs, 11 HRs and 71 RBI for Albuquerque in the Florida organization), John Mayberry, Jr. (.280 avg., 11 HRs and 44 RBI with Oklahoma in Texas chain) and Mike Gosling (4-4, seven saves and 3.75 ERA with Toronto's Syracuse club).

Including Castro, seven members of the 2008 Stanford club that advanced to the College World Series were selected in MLB's First-Year Player Draft. With Castro's debut over the weekend, five of the recent Cardinal products have began their professional careers as of July 15: Erik Davis (Eugene - San Diego), Randy Molina (Arizona Rookie League Mariners - Seattle), Sean Ratliff (Brooklyn - New York Mets) and Austin Yount (Ogden - Los Angeles Dodgers).
