Huskies Add Jacksonville Transfer for 2008-09
July 25, 2008
SEATTLE - The Husky women's tennis team received another boost today as head coach Jill Hultquist announced that Jacksonville University sophomore Lina Xu has transferred to Washington for the 2008-09 season.
Xu was the No. 1 singles player for the Dolphins of Jacksonville in her freshman season, leading the team to the Atlantic Sun Conference championship and a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
A native of China, Xu was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year as well as being named to the All-Conference First Team. Xu was 23-8 in singles play, including 17-5 at No. 1 singles. She was also 17-5 in doubles play. Xu had a pair of wins over Yevgeniya Stupak of East Tennessee State, who finished 87th in the ITA Rankings.
'We are very excited to have someone with Lina's experience come to Washington,' said Husky assistant coach Damon Coupe. 'She is a tough competitor that is not going to give an inch out on the court. Her tenacity makes opponents have to beat her. She adds a lot of depth to an already deep team.'
Xu will join highly-touted incoming freshmen Denise Dy and Samantha Smith as the newcomers on a rising Washington squad that made it back to the NCAA Championships last season for the first time in three years.
