Aug. 4, 2008
Junior midfielder Michael Stephens helped the Chicago Fire Super-20 team capture the North American National Championship on Sunday in Virginia Beach, VA. The Fire defeated the Toronto Lynx, 2-1, in the championship game. The second-year program is the first player development program to capture a national title.
The Naperville, IL native assisted on the game-winning goal in the 3-0 semifinal victory over the D.C. United Super-20s on Saturday. During the finals week, the Fire outscored its opponents, 15-2, in five games. The team has lost just once in regular season play through their first two seasons.
Stephens was selected to Soccer America's All-Freshman second team in 2006 and has started 42 career games for the Bruins with four goals and four assists.
