Aug. 7, 2008

Incoming freshman Stephanie Kono and junior Sydnee Michaels were eliminated in match play competition at the 107th U.S. Women's Amateur at the Eugene Country Club Thursday.

Michaels fell 1-up in the second round to Stepanie Sherlock, who advanced to the quarterfinals with an afternoon victory. After Michaels cut Sherlock's lead to one hole with a par at the 14th hole, she was unable to win another hole.

Kono, 18, won her second round match 4&3 over Jane Chin of Mission Viejo. But the Honolulu native lost 1-up to Whitney Neuhauser of Barboursville, VA in the round of 16. Down two holes after the 16th, Kono managed to cut the lead to one with a birdie at the 17th. Both players made par at the 18th.
