Men's Soccer
Team USA opened group play on Thursday with a 1-0 shutout victory over Japan. UCLA alumnus Marvell Wynne (2004-05) set up the game's only goal in the 47th minute, beating his man down the right flank and sending a cross into the box. The cross deflected off a Japanese defender and went right to Stuart Holden, whose shot slipped past goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa and trickled into the back of the net.

Midfielder Benny Feilhaber (2003-04) entered the game in the 83rd minute. Defender Patrick Ianni did not play.

The U.S., which currently sits atop Group B with three points, will next play the Netherlands on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 4:45 am PT. The game will be televised live on USA Network. The Netherlands and Nigeria played to a 0-0 tie and may have lost its star striker Roy Makaay to a foot injury in the first half.
