Munoz Qualifies for Semi-Final at U.S. Women's Amateur

Arizona State senior Azahara Munoz will continue her quest to be the sixth Sun Devil U.S. Women's Amateur Champion as she qualified for the semi-final at the 2008 U.S. Women's Amatuer held at the 6,516 yard par 72 Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Munoz will compete in the semi-final against best friend and Pac-10 rival Belen Mozo from USC.

Munoz, the 2008 NCAA Champion, punched in her ticket to the semi-final by defeating Australia's Stephanie Na 7 and 6. Munoz carded five birdies in the round. Incoming freshman Carlota Ciganda also qualified for the quarterfinal but fell 7 and 6 to Duke's Amanda Blumenherst.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will continue through August 10. Past Sun Devil U.S. Amateur champions include Amy Fruhwirth (1991), Joanne Gunderson-Carner (1957, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1968), Grace Park (1998), Pearl Sinn (1988) and Wendy Ward (1994).
