The South African team of Lyndon Ferns, Roland Schoeman, Ryk Neethling and Darian Townsend finished third in heat two with a time of 3:13.06. All four competed collegiately for the Wildcats. Also competing in the heat was Simon Burnett, who helped Great Britain finish fourth in a time of 3:13.69. Nicolas Nilo also participated in the men's 4x100-meter relay for Brazil.
** Matt Grevers, who trains in Tucson with UA head coach Frank Busch, anchored the U.S. 4x100-meter relay team to a world record time of 3:12.29 in heat one. Wildcats Jonas Persson (Sweden) and Joel Greenshields (Canada) helped their countries to third and fourth place finishes, respectively, in the heat.
** Grevers efforts in the 4x100 relay capped a nice day, as he posted an Olympic record in the heats of the 100-meter backstroke. His record-setting time was 53.41. Later in the day, he finished second in the 100-meter backstroke semifinals in a time of 52.99.
** Gerhard Zandberg (South Africa) won heat three in a time of 53.75. He later turned in a time of 53.98 to finish sixth in the 100 back semifinals. Jake Tapp (Canada) swam in the 100-meter backstroke heats and turned in a time of 55.54.
