Cougars Hold First Scrimmage of Fall Camp
Aug. 16, 2008
PULLMAN - It was an efficient day for WSU quarterbacks as the Cougars held their first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at Martin Stadium.
'There were some good plays on both sides of the ball,' WSU Head Coach Paul Wulff said. 'That was encouraging. I think there were some good things.'
Redshirt senior Gary Rogers, redshirt junior Kevin Lopina and redshirt freshman Marshall Lobbestael combined to complete 67 percent of their passes with one touchdown and no interceptions. Rogers completed 9-of-13 passes for 80 yards, Lopina went 7-of-12 for 90 yards and Lobbestael connected on each of his two attempts for 36 yards and a touchdown. Lopina also led the team with 29 rushing yards.
The WSU tight ends had a great scrimmage, combining for eight of the team's 18 receptions. Besides Frischknecht, Woodard caught two passes for 29 yards, Aaron Gehring had two receptions for 22 yards and freshman Skylar Stormo had a 20-yard touchdown reception, the lone touchdown and longest play of the afternoon.
Sophomore kicker Wade Penner converted 2-of-3 field goals, making a 21- and a 31-yarder. Fellow sophomore kicker Nico Grasu also converted 2-of-3, making a 22- and a 25-yarder. The duo each converted their only extra point attempt.
'That was our 15th practice, we have 14 to go,' Wulff said. 'Now we have to take some big steps. I think we will.'
The Cougars' next scrimmage will be held Aug. 22 at 2:30 p.m., at Martin Stadium.
