Mustain, Green Throw TDs In USC Football Scrimmage
Aug. 16, 2008
Quarterbacks Mitch Mustain and Garrett Green each threw touchdown passes, tailback Stafon Johnson ran for a score and cornerback Shareece Wright returned an interception for a TD to highlight the USC football team's 93-play intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday (Aug. 16) in front of 1,500 fans at the Coliseum.
Mustain, who was 6-of-12 passing for 118 yards, threw a 26-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Travon Patterson. Fellow wide receiver Brice Butler caught a 7-yard TD from Green, who hit 6-of-10 passes for 63 yards overall. Green came to USC in 2006 as a quarterback before being moved to safety and then spending last year as a wide receiver, but he was switched back to offense last Saturday after starting quarterback Mark Sanchez dislocated his kneecap.
Quarterback Aaron Corp was 12-of-16 passing for 64 yards. All 3 quarterbacks led scoring drives, but each also threw an interception, including Mustain on the first pass of the scrimmage that Wright returned 23 yards for a touchdown.
Johnson's TD run was 3 yards and it came 4 plays after his 46-yard scamper. He had a game-best 58 rushing yards on 5 carries.
Tailback Joe McKnight returned a kickoff 63 yards and a punt 56 yards.
Besides the 3 interceptions (linebacker Rey Maualuga and safety Drew McAllister had the other picks), USC also lost 2 fumbles (they were recovered by safety Will Harris and defensive tackle Armond Armstead).
'We're two weeks from game time,' said eighth-year USC head coach Pete Carroll, whose Trojans open their 2008 season on Aug. 30 at Virginia. 'We've still got a lot of work to do, but I like the way we're looking.'
Six-time defending Pac-10 champion USC has one more scrimmage scheduled during fall drills, set for this Thursday (Aug. 21) at 3:30 p.m. in the Coliseum. It is free and open to the public.
