Stanford Nabs No. 2 Spot In AVCA Preseason Poll

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's volleyball team came in at No. 2 today, when the American Volleyball Coaches Association released its annual preseason poll.

The Cardinal began last season at No. 2 in the poll as well, and finished the year as the NCAA runner-up with a trip to its second straight national championship match. The ranking marks the sixth time in the last seven years that Stanford has appeared in the top five in the preseason poll.

The Cardinal returns 11 letterwinners and six starters from the team that advanced to the NCAA title match last season, including 2007 AVCA National Player of the Year Foluke Akinradewo and All-Americans Cynthia Barboza and Alix Klineman.

Defending national champion Penn State took the top spot in the poll, while Texas, USC and California rounded out the top five. Five Pac-10 squads made the top 10, with an additional school, Oregon, coming in at No. 11. The Cardinal is scheduled to play 14 regular-season matches against teams ranked in the poll, including non-conference showdowns with No. 3 Texas, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 10 Cal Poly and No. 23 New Mexico State.

The Cardinal kicks off the 2008 season at the Runza/AVCA Showcase in Omaha, Neb. on Aug. 29. The Cardinal will meet No. 7 Nebraska in the season opener at 7 p.m. (CT), before battling No. 3 Texas in its second match of the tournament, Aug. 31 at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
