Cougar Defense Highlights Scrimmage

PULLMAN - The Washington State University football team held its second and final scrimmage of fall camp Friday at Martin Stadium, and the defense led the way for the Cougars.
Redshirt sophomore safety Easton Johnson posted two interceptions, and redshirt junior safety Xavier Hicks, Jr. added a pick of his own.
The Cougar defense held the offense to 42 yards rushing on 15 carries; with redshirt junior quarterback Kevin Lopina finishing as WSU's leading rusher. Lopina, who also led the Cougars in rushing during the first scrimmage, picked up 18 yards on three carries. Running back Chantz Staden (junior) led all running backs with 15 yards on five carries.
Redshirt senior quarterback Gary Rogers went 11-of-17 with 140 yards, three interceptions and a touchdown. On the final two-minute drive of the scrimmage he went 6-of-6 for 65 yards, capped by 15-yard touchdown pass to senior Brandon Gibson. Lopina completed 7-of-13 for 75 yards and a touchdown, while redshirt freshman Marshall Lobbestael went 3-of-5 for 22 yards.
Once again WSU had 10 different receivers catch a pass, with redshirt senior Ben Woodard leading the way. The tight end hauled in six passes for 74 yards, both team highs. Fellow tight end Tony Thompson (redshirt junior) caught one of two touchdown passes on the day, an 8-yard strike from Lopina. Gibson finished the day with three receptions for 40 yards, all coming on the final drive.
WSU opens its season in the Cougar Gridiron Classic, against Oklahoma State, Saturday, Aug. 30, at Qwest Field in Seattle. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
