Florence To Join Hicks On Swiss Pro Hoops Team
Aug. 22, 2008
SEATTLE - Former Washington women's basketball standout Emily Florence has signed a one-year contract to play professionally overseas with Universite BC Neuchatel in Switzerland for the 2008-09 season. Florence, who ran the point for the Huskies the last four years, will be reunited with her former UW teammate Cameo Hicks who is also a member of the squad.
Florence graduated in June with a degree in communications after wrapping up her stellar career with the Huskies this past spring. Both Florence and Hicks will head to Europe next week to begin preparations for their upcoming season.
'Obviously I'm really excited,' Florence said. 'To get the chance to play in Europe is a big opportunity, and to be able to experience something new and travel is something I'm really looking forward to. Cameo was the one who told her coach about me. The team needed a point guard and it just worked out perfectly. I know they are a running team so it should fit my game well.'
Hicks, a 2007 Washington graduate, excelled in her first year of playing professionally overseas. In Swiss League play, she averaged 20.7 points and 6.7 rebounds, while shooting 58.8 percent from the field. Universite BC Neuchatel also competes in the Euro League.
'Emily will be a great addition to our team,' Hicks said. 'We have a lot of scorers and some really great post players, and I think with her type of game - her hustle and her ability to do the little things - will be real important for our team. There are three championships that we play in Switzerland and we won two of the three last year. We should have won three, but I think we'll definitely win all three this year with Emily.'
Florence was a model of consistency during her four-year career at UW, starting all but three games including a streak of 113-consecutive. As a senior she was named an All-Pac-10 third-team selection and earned Pac-10 Defensive Team honors. She finished her career fifth on UW's all-time list for assists (397) and seventh in steals (217). Florence also racked up 626 points and 539 rebounds. As a point guard, Florence led UW in rebounding as a junior and senior. She was also a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree.
Together, Florence and Hicks helped the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2005-06 and 2006-07, including a trip to the second round in 2007. Hicks was a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 player for UW and ranks 11th on Washington's career list for scoring with 1,472 points.
Florence joins a long list of former Husky women's basketball players to continue their playing careers in the professional ranks whether in the U.S. or overseas. After playing two years overseas, former Husky Kristen O'Neill is currently a member of the WNBA's Seattle Storm. Huskies who played overseas during the 2007-08 season include Hicks, O'Neill (Spain/Ireland), Jill Bell (Spain), Maggie O'Hara (Denmark), Giuliana Mendiola (Greece) and Breanne Watson (Sweden/Finland).
