Niven Wins Ladies British Open Amateur

Aug. 22, 2008

BERKELEY, Calif. - California junior Roseanne Niven won the Ladies British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Malone Golf Club near Belfast, Ireland. The victory comes on the heels of Niven's semifinal showing in the British Women's Open Amateur Match Play Championship at the North Berwick Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland, in June.

Today, Niven beat Kylie Walker at the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Niven posted a score of even-par 288 with a final round of four-under-par 68 - the lowest of the championship. Niven was the seventh Scot to win the stroke-play tournament, which started in 1969.

A native of the Perthshire village of Tiverton, Niven shot five-under par for the second 36 holes of the tournament to climb up the leaderboard from a tie for 19th at the start of the final day. She tallied a one-under par 71 in the third round and then signed off with a 68.

In her third round, Niven had five birdies and a double bogey 6 at the 14th. In her final circuit, Niven, who finished runner-up to Breanne Loucks in her last trip to Ireland for the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play, had two halves of 34.
