Aug. 21, 2008
PINEHURST, N.C. - Rising sophomore Sihwan Kim advanced to the Round of 16 in match play at the 108th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Golf and Country Club before falling to Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) today in 23 holes.
Kim needed 19 holes to defeat his first round opponent, Sam Saunders (Orlando, Fla.), yesterday, and then moved past Canada's Matt Hill by a score of 5 & 4 this morning, but was unable to best Holland in the afternoon. The two players tied seven straight holes including the first four extra holes before Kim lost to a birdie.
This marks the end of the individual summer amateur tournament participation for the Cardinal golfers. The squad will now make its way back to The Farm in order to prepare for their first fall tournament, The Fighting Illini Invitational, held at Chicago's Olympia Fields from Sept. 19-21.
