Stanford Routs Pacific 5-0 In Home Opener
Aug. 24, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 10 Stanford women's soccer team opened up the season with a 5-0 shutout of Pacific today at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal put the game away early, scoring five goals in the first half and limiting the Tigers to only seven shots in the game.
Freshman Lindsay Taylor scored her first career goal to put Stanford out front in the 17th minute. The Los Altos, Calif. native fired the ball past the outstretched hands of Pacific goalkeeper Amanda McNab in to the upper-90 of the goal from 18 yards out.
The goal opened the floodgates for the Cardinal, who went on to score three more goals within the next ten minutes. Last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Christen Press, took a cross from freshman Teresa Noyola in the 22nd minute and one-timed it into the side netting for her first of the season. Press quickly made it 3-0, as she added her second tally of the game just 37 seconds later when she beat a Tiger defender and smacked the ball low and hard into the corner of the net. Press then earned an assist on junior Kelley O'Hara's goal in the 26th minute.
Stanford's scoring spree culminated in the 36th minute when a Cardinal free kick curled towards the net and was deflected in by a Pacific defender for an own goal.
Sophomore Kira Maker handled one shot for her first shutout of the year, and third of her career. The Cardinal used 21 players in the match, including junior Ali Riley who returned from the Olympics this past week. Riley entered the game at defense in the 66th minute and finished out the second half.
'The team played well,' said Head Coach Paul Ratcliffe. 'We broke the ice early and got some very nice goals from a lot of different people. It was a good start to the season and hopefully we'll build on it and prepare for next weekend's games.'
Pacific falls to 1-1-0 on the season, while Stanford heads into next weekend's home matches with a 1-0-0 record. Stanford will face Navy Friday Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. and No. 14 Boston College Sunday Aug. 31 at 1 p.m at Cagan Stadium.
