No. 3 Texas Sweeps No. 4 USC In 2008 Season Opener
Aug. 29, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. -- Julianne Faucette registered 13 kills Friday as the No. 3 Texas Longhorns swept the No. 4 USC Women of Troy, 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 30-28), in first day action at the 2008 Runza/AVCA Showcase. In the season opener for both teams, Texas exacted revenge after USC swept the Longhorns in the Gainesville (Fla.) Regional final last season.
Freshman Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) led the Trojans with a match-high 17 kills, recording four digs and three service aces. Sophomore Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) chipped in nine kills. The Trojans committed 27 errors in the match as the team hit just .095 in the match.
Lauren Paolini hit .421 for the Longhorns (9-1-19) along with registering six block assists. The Longhorns outblocked the Trojans, 13-6, in the match.
'I thought we let one slip away,' said USC head coach Mick Haley. 'We're young and got out of rhythm, and we felt bad about ourselves because we couldn't get in rhythm. Instead of fighting through it, we went for home runs instead of playing more experienced. That is going to be what we have to fight through to get better. I think this team is still a Final Four team, and I'll put that out there right now. I think they will get this eventually and be very good. This may be a great opportunity for us.'
Roleder and Lauren Williams teamed up for two blocks to begin set one. Ashley Engle and Paolini used kills to help the Longhorns take an 8-5 lead for the Longhorns. Jupiter then unleashed four straight kills as the Trojans took the lead, 10-9. Texas continued their physical blocking as two straight blocks put them back up top at 12-10. A Texas service error and attack error put USC up 15-13 at the television timeout. After four hits were called against Texas, Faucette put down two kills as USC called its first timeout with the Trojans leading by a 20-19 margin. Jupiter made it 21-19 with another kill before the Longhorns reeled off four straight points. Two attack errors by the Trojans were part of the run. Back-to-back service errors game set point to Texas at 24-22, but Roleder and Jessica Gysin tied it at 24-24. Zoe Garrett's error put Texas ahead again, but Roleder used a back row kill for a 25-25 score. Faucette put the Longhorns again with a kill and Rachael Adams and Jennifer Doris stuffed another USC attempt to win the first set.
Gysin made it a 5-2 lead in the second set before the Longhorns used a 7-1 run to take control of the game early. Paolini put down back-to-back terminations to start the streak. Faucette and Engle recorded service aces, sandwiching a sneak kill from setter Michelle Kocher. Hooker hit a kill and followed with a service ace to take a 9-6 lead. After a USC timeout, Texas kept the pressure on with an 8-4 run as Hooker's kill made it 17-10. Hooker put down two straight, followed by Engle's kill for the 22-12 advantage. Engle closed it out as Texas took the 2-0 lead in the match.
In set three, it was Texas racing to a 5-0 lead. Hooker made it 6-0 before Jupiter hit two kills, followed by Gysin's kill cut the lead in half to 6-3. Doris used a kill and aided on a block as Texas extended its lead to five, 10-5. Garrett capped three straight points as USC trailed by two, 10-8. Doris was the center of a 4-1 Texas run with three kills and a 14-9 score. With the Longhorns looking to pull away, the Trojans used Jupiter again to change the complexion of the set as her two kills started a run of eight straight points. Geena Urango's back row kill made it 18-14 for the Trojans. Both teams traded points before Texas answered with its own streak, rattling off seven straight points. The Longhorns took advantage of four Trojan errors to get match point at 24-22. Hooker's service error and a Longhorn error tied the game at 24-24 and Jupiter put the Trojans up with a kill. Faucette tied it with a kill and another Adams/Doris block gave another match point for the Longhorns. Roleder hit a back row kill, followed by a Texas error to take the advantage at 27-26. Faucette drilled two kills before Jupiter tied it at 28-28. Faucette put one more down and Roleder misfired on a free ball at the net to give the match to the Longhorns.
