Volleyball Wins Bronco Tournament
Aug. 30, 2008
BOISE, Idaho -- The first weekend of the Andrew Palileo era at Washington State proved a successful one as the Cougar volleyball team won the Boise State Bronco Invitational tournament after defeating the host school 3-1 in the final match.
WSU defeated Boise State 3-1 Saturday night with game scores of 9-25, 25-23, 31-29, and 25-21 to win the Boise State Bronco Invite and start the season undefeated at 3-0.
Cougar Emily Rooney, a senior transfer from Red Wing, Minn., was named tournament MVP. WSU's junior libero, Kelly Hyder (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and freshman setter/outside hitter Breann Nesselhuf (Swink, Colo.) were named to all-tournament team.
In the final tournament win against Boise State, Cassie Robbins led the Cougs with 12 kills (.458), while Rooney had 11 kills and six blocks. Jackie Albright added another 11 kills while Renee Bordelon had 46 assists and Hyder contributed a match-high 26 digs.
The Broncos (0-3) were led by the 14 kills from Sadie Maughan. Lydia Blaha had eight blocks as BSU out-blocked WSU 15 to 10.
'We came out a little slow and that really put us in a bad position. I made a couple changes with the lineup with Meagan Ganzer and Breann Nesselhuf on the outside and Renee set again,' Palileo said. 'We found a lineup that worked for the rest of the match. I thought the freshmen who came in and played did a great job and Renee did a great job of running the offense and finding the right people and we played steady in sets two and three and four.
'Emily (Rooney) again did a good job even though her stats weren't as good as the first matches but she received the MVP for the tournament. I think over the course of the tournament she really saved us in a couple of situations.
'Defensively Kelly Hyder played another great match and Bree Flach and Stephanie Weishaar also helped out. Overall the stats didn't look very good but I think we got a little bit better and obviously we did since we won it in only four this time.'
Washington State will compete in the Idaho Classic Tournament next weekend in Moscow, meeting host Idaho, Notre Dame and Eastern Washington.
