Sept. 2, 2008
PEBBLE BEACH, CA - Cardinal freshman Sydney Burlison, 18, from Salinas, CA and Champions Tour professional Fuzzy Zoeller, finished 25-under par to win the pro/junior title at the Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach presented by Nature Valley.
The fifth annual Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach is a unique Champions Tour event that pairs 78 junior golfers with 78 professionals. The tournament took place Aug. 29 - 31 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course. Burlison was one of 22 junior golfers who made the cut to play the third and final round on Sunday at Pebble Beach Golf Links and is a member of The First Tee of Monterey County.
Burlison will enter Stanford University this week as a college freshman. This is the fourth year she has played in this tournament. Influenced by her father to start playing golf at age eight, Burlison hopes to win the NCAA Championship while at Stanford and has aspirations to play on the LPGA.
'This has been an extraordinary tournament and for the first time, we are delighted to have a full field of participants exclusively from The First Tee Chapters,' said Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., CEO of The First Tee. 'We are so pleased to have Sydney as the first young woman to win the pro/junior competition and forever grateful to Walmart and General Mills,' Barrow added.
Walmart and the Champions Tour have partnered with The First Tee to promote The First Tee Life Skills Experience, which gives young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop life-enhancing values such as confidence, perseverance and judgment through golf and character education.
'The momentum continues to build for this unique Champions Tour tournament and we are thrilled that a female has won the pro-junior team competition. Sydney Burlison is a terrific mentor at The First Tee of Monterey County and we are very proud to call her champion,' said Ollie Nutt, President and CEO, Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
